There are many distractions taking me away from the sculpture again.
But some time away made me rethink the scale and yesterday I changed it. It’s rare that I decide to go smaller,
but in this case scaling down works. I can’t deny that it’s easier to do detail on a larger scale, but when
there’s a complex composition involved, as this is, it helps to work smaller.
February has always
been my least favorite month – I always seem to want to sleep the month away. But now just getting through January
has put a different light on February and I’m appreciating more daylight, even if I do nothing with it.

Returned from Kentucky shortly past midnight on Sunday. The
drive back was far less eventful than the drive down. I didn’t decide until late Monday afternoon to drive to
Kentucky and I had no idea that I’d drive into a snow and ice storm. My car was completely encased in ice when
I finally arrived at the Abbey of Gethsemani Tuesday afternoon. I drove straight through, except for a few short rest
stops throughout the evening and night. When I began to encounter snow, I slowed considerably and once the trucks left
the highway, I just continued at a very cautious pace - tortoise. Once I was in Kentucky, I tried to sleep in my car
for awhile at a rest stop, but after an hour the noisy conversations of early travelers got me up and on my way again.
However, before continuing, I did call the Abbey to see if there was room for me to join the ongoing retreat and there was.
I still had no idea of what I'd be driving through to get there, so I just kept driving. Usually I take a large variety of art supplies with me wherever I travel,
but this time I went with only a small sketch and yards of several gauges of armature wire. I was determined to get
this sculpture right. Total silence and no distractions were key. There is a spirituality factor in play also.
Now the sculpture is real.
